When everything in a kitchen has its place, it creates an enjoyable space in which to cook, unpack groceries, tidy up or just hang out. Take note of these tips for your next renovation or new build to create smarter storage solutions for your kitchen.

Pantry

The pantry is where you’d usually store canned goods, jars, bottles and tuck away smaller appliances. However, if your space or budget is limited, you can ask your builder to get creative with a pull-out pantry garage or a full height cabinet with ample drawers and shelves, for example. Do an inventory of what you want to store and measure the tallest, widest, smallest and heaviest items to make sure everything has a place and is easily accessible.

Recycling

Position easily accessible drawers under or near the sink to hide recycling bins. You may also consider a built-in food caddy to make it easier to scrape food waste off the benchtop.

Bottom drawers

Instead of bottom cabinets, go for drawers to maximise storage. Drawers are easily customisable these days for all your needs. Plus, everything in the back of the cupboard comes right out to the front, so you can have a bird’s eye view of the contents, making drawers more practical.

Pull-out benchtops

If you’re truly intent on saving space, have your builder install a benchtop that can be easily slid in and out. This is especially useful for food prep when most of your benchtop is occupied by small appliances or other bulky items.

Concealed drawers

Drawers inside drawers not only maximise storage. A full slab drawer that conceals additional drawers give a cleaner look to your kitchen overall.
