When you’re renovating your home, you’re going to encounter difficult decisions all the time. No matter what type of budget you’re working with, compromises will still need to be made, whether it’s due to time, cost, quality or availability.
When balancing the ever-changing demands of a home project, your choices will impact all of these constraints. Understanding how these constraints affect each other is the first step to good renovation decision making.
Identify which factors are more important to you. Is time, cost or quality? These three constraints form the three sides of a triangle and they must work together and cannot stand alone. They are all interrelated, which means if you change or prioritise one factor, then another will change as well.
You’ll have to decide whether you want your project done well, fast or cheaply. You cannot have it done all three at once. You will need to pick two to sacrifice or compromise the third factor.
A home renovation that’s done well and fast will cost more because quality materials and more staffing are more expensive. A home renovation that’s done fast will be cheap, but that’s because corners may be cut in order to get the job done faster. A home renovation that’s done well over a longer period of time can be less expensive because you’ll be using up less resources.
Understanding and identifying these constraints will allow you to clearly communicate to your team what needs prioritising. The result will be a smoother home renovation and a result that meets your expectations and standards.
