With hard surfaces everywhere, bathrooms run the risk of being cold, uninviting rooms. It’s important to have lighting that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing in a bathroom, which is one of the most used spots in your home.

Ambient lighting

This is the overall light source for a room and includes downlights, pendants, chandeliers, wall sconces and floor lamps. The importance of ambient lighting could actually make or break how your room ends up feeling. Too few downlights offer an impractical amount of illumination and too many downlights will have you feeling you’re in a supermarket.

Task lighting

This is lighting for specific tasks, such as applying makeup or shaving. In the bathroom, this can mean installing wall sconces above your vanity, placing soft lighting at face level around a bathroom mirror and placing small lights in cupboards or wardrobes.

Accent lighting

Accent lighting is used to highlight things around your home. For example, spotlights above a piece of art or lighting in cabinetry to illuminate the decorative objects on display.

Natural light

Nothing beats natural, especially in the bathroom. Wherever possible, plan to have windows for both lighting and airflow, whether it be with awning windows or a skylight.
