When it comes to incorporating smart home features in your renovation or build, everyone’s aspirations are different. Maybe you want to implement a whole home entertainment system. You could reduce your carbon footprint with the latest green technology. Perhaps you want to protect your home and family with a complete security setup.

In the early planning stages of your reno or build, speak to your builder about what type of smart home features are important to you. This will be a key factor for when they plot wiring and installing appliances so that everything works seamlessly together.

Water heaters and controllers

Smart water heaters connect to your home’s internet through Wi-Fi. This gives you remote access to all of the water heater’s functions. You can adjust temperature and set schedules. You can even monitor the status and shut it down if there’s a problem. This gives you a chance to call in a technician and avert disastrous water leaks.

Smart connected appliances

Make sure your project purchase list includes smart appliances. That includes refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers, and dishwashers. Then, you’ll need a unifying management system that can recognise and operate those appliances. Google Home is a popular program that acts as a hub for an ever-growing number of smart devices.

Smart home security systems

Smart security systems keep homeowners informed beyond alarms and alerting the local authorities. That information is dually shared with the monitoring centre and homeowner in real-time. While wireless security systems are popular, wired are more difficult to tamper with. A hidden digital video recorder can record hundreds or thousands of hours.

Smart garage door openers

With a smartphone, you can control a smart garage door from anywhere you have a cell phone connection. You might be halfway to work and you think that you forgot to close the door. With the app, you can verify whether you did and shut it remotely.

Smart thermostats

It’s certainly cool to be able to control the temperature of your home from your phone from anywhere, but these smart thermostats can do more than that. They can “learn” from your frequent settings and can adjust the temperature based on your behaviour. This also allows the thermostat to conserve energy when no one is at home.
