As the weeks get hotter, a cool dip in your own private pool becomes more and more tempting. If you’re finally ready to take the dive and have a pool installed in your home, ask these questions first.

What will it look like?

Do you want a big pool for the entire family or are you looking for a sleek lap pool? Will you go for a classic rectangle shape or something with a little more personality? Do you want a spa-like vibe or do you want to achieve a coastal feel? Consider how your pool will fit your lifestyle and the overall design of your home.

Where will you put it?

This is especially important when you’re incorporating a pool into the design of a new build. The back of your block is a great position to create an isolated oasis feel and to avoid noise from the pool travelling into your home. However, if you want to keep a closer eye on the kids, closer to your home, like right next to the deck or patio, would be ideal. The side of your block is the best of both worlds, as long as space allows.

What materials will you use?

There are two materials used when installing pools–concrete and fibreglass. Concrete gives you plenty of versatility from finishes to features. You can create custom ledges and alcoves. One con of a concrete pool is it will take longer to install and is relatively costlier.

While less versatile in terms of design, a fibreglass pool is faster to install and considerably less expensive. Fibreglass also works as a natural insulator, ensuring your pool can still be a comfortable source of enjoyment in the colder months. Fibreglass is also more durable than concrete.

What special features do you want?

Do you want your pool to be heated? Perhaps you want a water feature or an infinity pool effect. If you want a spa-like feel, a jet system and abundant built-in seating would be ideal. A stunning addition would also be a tanning ledge, which would also double as a safe, shallow area of the pool for small children to play in.
