While open floor plans are trendy and can maximise the use of a home, it can be a big commitment, especially if you’re knocking down pre existing walls. Before you give your builder the go signal, take some points into consideration as to whether an open floor plan is the right plan for you and your home.
Public spaces
Do you want to be regularly seeing your kitchen, dining and living area all the time? The tidy space you have in mind could benefit from some walls to create a sense of partition between various living and work spaces.
The kitchen
Including the kitchen in an open plan design is great if you prefer cooking while entertaining guests or watching over the children. However, a closed off kitchen has its benefits as well. You can separate the work of cooking and cleaning from the fun and leisure of the living and dining areas. Also, you may be a homeowner who wants a private and cosy kitchen.
Noise
One of the biggest benefits of an open floor plan is that it incorporates multifunctional spaces more efficiently than other kinds of layouts can. However, if you are someone who is particular about peace and quiet, separate rooms may be ideal. A closed off home office won’t give you the same privacy as a study nook near the kitchen.
Entertainment
Some people would rather have no television in the living space or close to the kitchen. You could create a whole separate room for TV viewing. However, putting up barriers between the living room with the TV from the rest of the house could also give you the quiet you need.
