You need a game plan if you’re planning to stay in your home as it goes through a renovation, and when you have children and/or pets, you need to make sure your plan is solid. Take note of these tips before your home reno begins.
Assign separate entrances
Aside from keeping your home clean, this setup will ensure tools and materials are not accidentally being left behind in non-work areas. Choose an entrance for workers closest to the working zone, even if that means the family passes through the kitchen or garage doors.
Designate a safe zone
Find a space in your home that’s safe for kids to play in. Allow them to “take over” a room in the meantime, such as the dining room or the den. A closed off safe space is especially important for pets to keep both them and workers safe. It also may be a good idea to properly introduce the workers to your pet so your pet will feel safer.
Seal off construction areas
A bit of yellow tape may not be enough to keep pets and children from wandering into a work area. Speak to your builder about secure ways they can condone off areas where construction is taking place. Plastic sheeting and safety gates are good options to consider.
Beware of fumes
Pets are especially sensitive to fumes. Make sure to speak to your builder about when they’re doing any work that involves materials that give off fumes so you can plan ahead.
Keep up normal routines
This is particularly important for pet owners. Pets like cats and dogs are creatures of habit, so by sticking to a regular routine, they will feel more secure.
