If you don’t plan the lighting design of your kitchen well, you could end up with lighting that’s too bright or dull, incorrectly placed, or too big or small in size. Having several sources of lighting in a kitchen allows you to adjust it as needed, especially if you have an open plan layout. As one of the most used rooms in your house, you want to get every detail right no matter your needs. Consider these four different types when choosing your lightning fixtures and their placements: task lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting and decorative lighting.

Ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is all about setting the mood in a space, something you don’t want to overlook even in your kitchen. The temperature of your lights, for example, can dramatically alter your environment. Warm white LED lights make you feel warm and comfortable while generating little heat, compared to the starkness of cool white LED light.

Pendant lights

If you have a centre island, pendant lights will add to the dramatic statement. However, make sure the size of the pendant suits the size of the room. When choosing the design, think about how the style of lighting matches the style of the kitchen.

Under-cabinet lighting

This type of task lighting is crucial when it comes to food preparation. If it’s too bright, it casts shadows or isn’t bright enough, it doesn’t meet your basic needs. To avoid shadows, task lighting is best as concealed LED strip lighting under overhead cabinets above the bench area.

Natural light

Whether through windows or skylights, bring as much natural light as you can into your kitchen to lift the space’s mood and yours as well. However, you’ll want to consider how UV rays affect the materials in your kitchen. Speak to your builder about specifying UV-resistant materials in your new kitchen.
