Often utility spaces, such as the laundry room, are poorly planned out or banished to dark basements and garages. However, you’re likely to spend a lot of time in this area, so why not give it the attention it deserves when renovating your home?

Location

When renovating the laundry room, ask yourself these questions: Do you plan on working with the space you have? Or are you relocating the laundry room to another part of the house? Be sure to inform your builder early in the planning stages because installing new appliances and adding paint is a different job from rerouting plumbing or creating a whole new room.

Function

If you like to hang up clothes right away, maybe you’ll want to make sure you get a hanging rod in your space and even some drying racks. Consider if you need space for an ironing board and a spacious washing station.

Many people also make their laundry room function as mudrooms, storage rooms, craft rooms, pet rooms, and more. Think about how you’re going to use the space as this will determine size, layout and the amount of surface and storage you need.

Appliances

The selection of your appliances, or your existing appliances, will greatly affect other decisions for your space. For example, do you have or want side-by-side or stacked appliances? Do you want or have front-loading or top-loading appliances?

Materials

The materials in a laundry room should be able to withstand moisture, steam and chemicals. A reliable benchtop material, for example, is quartz. You want something that can stand up to spilled detergents and bleach.

Budget

When creating your budget, start with the big expenses: cabinets, flooring and appliances. After all, laundry rooms are utilitarian spaces first and foremost. Once you tackle that, you can move on other elements if your budget permits, such as painting, refacing and decor.
