Choosing kitchen fixtures and finishes can make a homeowner feel like a child  in a candy store. It can either be an exciting or paralysing experience. This guide can help you with how and when to choose kitchen fixtures during the different stages of your kitchen renovation.

Appliances, sinks, lighting

Select appliances and sinks during the preliminary design phase. This is so your builder’s plans can reflect the proper sizes, which will also affect the cabinetry layout

When choosing your lighting fixtures, also consider the type and amount, such as how many pendant lights over the island. Decide whether or not you want a prep sink in addition to your main sink. You might have selected your appliances earlier in the design phase, in terms of manufacturer, model number and size. Whether the finish is stainless or vintage enamel, this will influence the rest of your kitchen renovation.

Cabinets, benchtops, tile

You may start the finishes and fixture selection process from a different jumping-off point. Create an overall palette of materials for your cabinets, benchtops, and tile.

Flooring

Even if you’re not trying to match new floors to old floors, doing stain tests on samples of the actual flooring is the best way to achieve a cohesive design. If you’re doing tile or stone floors, work on picking those materials at the same time as cabinets, backsplash and countertops.

Paint colours

Once you’ve finalised the collage of materials for the kitchen, lay it out when selecting paint colours. Colours and tones in the materials can affect the look of the paint colours.

Decorative details

Don’t forget details you wish to add to your design, such as shaped cabinet doors, niches for spices and oils as well as decorative lighting.
