How do you know which tiles are suited for your renovation or new build? Whether it’s for your kitchen, bathroom or patio, you want to be discerning about what tile you choose. Design is important, of course, but there are several other factors to take into consideration.
Durability
In high traffic areas, you want a tile with high abrasion resistance. The PEI rating system used in Australia is a guide to help you determine how well a tile will wear.
Absorption
During wet and humid weather, tiles with high absorption are useful, especially in outdoor areas. Vitrified porcelain rates low (less than 0.5 per cent); semi-vitrified tiles absorb 3 to 6 per cent and standard glazed wall tiles absorb between 10 and 20 per cent.
Size and shape
The size and shape of a tile is called its format. Formats range from tiny 15 x 15 millimetre mosaics to 400 x 400 millimetre formats and larger. It’s best to use small tiles in small areas, such as splashbacks or feature areas. Large tiles are suited to spacious rooms, adding to the sense of openness and flow.
Finish
Do you want matt, semi-polished, high gloss, hammered, honed or textured? The finish of a tile impacts appearance, functionality and safety.
