There are so many elements to think through when trying to make your dream kitchen a reality. Ask yourself these questions to make sure you nail down the design and practicality of your new kitchen.
Who will I hire?
Perhaps the most important decision you’ll make when undertaking a building project is choosing the right people to work on it. Choose a builder who’s not only licensed and skilled, but has experience in the particular kitchen design you want to accomplish. Check their past projects, speak to former clients or even book a site visit to see if you are your future builder are suited for each other.
What is my mission?
It’s important to establish how you want your kitchen to function. Who’s going to use your kitchen and how? Do you have a large family? Do you have pets? Do you like to entertain and require comfortable seating? Are you a baker who needs extra bench space or a second oven? By asking these big questions before you start making smaller-scale decisions, you’ll be able to pin down exactly what you want out of your ideal space.
What are my nonnegotiables and where do I compromise?
Identify the items on top of your wish list, but also note which items you’re willing to swap out a cheaper alternative for or remove altogether. This new kitchen may be the opportunity to finally install the upscale range you’ve been dreaming of. However, you may want to scale back on certain fixtures and finishes to stick to your budget.
What is a good layout?
Consider the space between cooktops and windows or tower cabinets, and between electrical outlets and sinks. Think about which appliances can sit in close proximity to others, and take account of whether doors can open safely, as well as the minimum distance between a run of cabinets and an island, for instance, for a comfortable walkway.
