The kitchen tends to be the room in our home that needs the most cleaning. However, with some planning, you can have a kitchen that makes cleaning a breeze and allows you to enjoy your space.

Flat front cabinets

Smooth furniture fronts will result in less buildup of cooking residue forming on decorative grooves and ridges. Watch out for cutout pulls, though, since they can harbour crumbs. Similarly, avoid open shelves as they gather dust and grime.

A simple backsplash

Tile is a popular choice for a backsplash, but you will have to spend time cleaning the grout. If you’re set on tile, pick a large-format style to minimise the amount of grout you have to clean. If you choose a glass backsplash, you won’t have to deal with grout at all.

Benchtop material

You want a material that is nonporous, prevents stains and is easy to wipe clean, such as quartz or steel. Sold surfaces, such as Corian, are probably the most hygienic as they have a seamless finish and therefore don’t have grooves to trap dirt.

Shelf and drawer liners

Drawers and shelves can be challenging to keep tidy, but lining them with wipeable liner material, cut to size, can prolong the life of your units

Easy-to-clean appliances

Choose appliances that are fuss-free and easy to wipe down. An induction cooktop is a wise choice for a low-maintenance kitchen as it’s flat, easy and safe to clean.
