If you want to add some personality to a room in an unexpected way, look up at your ceiling. If it’s a plain, flat, painted surface, you have plenty of ways to add more intrigue to the space, whether it’s your living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or home office.

Wallpaper

If you love a certain wallpaper pattern, there’s no need to stop with it when the walls end. Continue and wallpaper your ceiling to give the space a cosier feeling. This design works well in powder rooms or bedrooms.

Tray

A tray ceiling is quite a common choice to add some depth to a room. However, you can keep it interesting with the right colour scheme or, if you want to let natural sunlight bounce throughout the room, you can stick to a classic white.

Wood

A simple wooden ceiling adds a Scandinavian look to a contemporary home. To draw the eye upwards, consider installing an eye-catching light fixture. You can also go for a more rustic look, like a weathered wooden ceiling to give the space a more earthy vibe.

Montone

Play with different shades of the same colour, like blue or green or even black, in certain rooms. Consider an all blue home office with a muddled blue ceiling. Also, if your ceiling is older and has seen some wear, black paint can hide most flaws.

Contrast

Applying a contrasting colour to the ceiling can dramatically alter your perception of the space. It’s like a reflector bouncing light down into the room, and the quality of that light affects the room’s character. A charcoal grey ceiling against all pink walls would make a statement as would a warm tan ceiling against green tiled walls.
