Enhancing the organisation and functionality of your kitchen will allow the space to feel open, appear tidy and look great while meeting your household’s needs, whether that’s prepping food, hosting guests or simply a space for hanging out.
Maximising storage
There’s no such thing as “too much storage” for a kitchen. Speak to your builder about custom storage solutions to use every nook and cranny of your kitchen. Think pullout spice racks, sliding shelves for pots and pans, a pullout pantry, a slideout prep station, a beverage station, recycling bin drawers, and more.
Hiding small appliances
It makes a huge difference when you don’t see rows of appliances on the benchtops, and it also frees up space for prep work when cooking or baking. Consider appliance garages, which are storage cabinets with rollup fronts that retract the same way a garage door does. If you have the space and budget to spare, you may even want to have a butler’s pantry.
Open storage
Try utilising a wall for added storage of everyday items. Open shelving, hooks, baskets and the like make for accessible storage solutions. This is also a great way to show off decorative tilework or bricks that otherwise might be covered by bulky cabinets.
Consistent design
Hiding bulkier appliances can make for a fuss-free kitchen, especially for open-plan living areas. Appliance garages and a butler’s pantry are some solutions already mentioned, but you may also want to consider an integrated-panel option. While more expensive, many appliances come with this option and will create a continuous, clean look throughout your space without breaking up the visual flow.
Lighting
Cooking and cleaning in the kitchen requires good lighting. While natural light is always nice, mounting under cabinet lights will help you find what you need, especially at night. You can also have LED light strips installed to the inside of your cabinets and drawers.
